Are we ready for a solar storm blackout?

In a recent article published by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) they said the USA wouldn't be able to cope with a major solar flare that can possibly interrupt America's power grid. Such an event could actually doom most of America's transformers, crippling the USA's power grid for "months" and anarchy rage on in America as the government wouldn't be able to control its citizens.

The report went on stating: "A contemporary repetition of the [1859] event would cause significantly more extensive (and possibly catastrophic) social and economic disruptions, space weather can produce solar storm electromagnetic fields that induce extreme currents in wires, disrupting power lines, causing wide-spread blackouts and affecting communication cables that support the Internet. Severe space weather also produces solar energetic particles and the dislocation of the Earth's radiation belts, which can damage satellites used for commercial communications, global positioning and weather forecasting."

Later stating that: "Impacts would be felt on interdependent infrastructures with, for example, potable water distribution affected within several hours; perishable foods and medications lost in 12-24 hours; immediate or eventual loss of heating/air conditioning, sewage disposal, phone service, transportation, fuel resupply and so on."

Estimations on about exactly how many people would be affected is around the 130,000,000 people. In simple terms, that's 130 MILLION American's would be affected by a major solar storm caused blackout. Also, not to mention, our defense "could" be down because of a solar storm. Crippling America's defense systems can and just might have dire consequences. Although our defense department does have generators, they can also be doomed in the surge of electrical energy caused by a major solar storm since nearly all generators are hooked up the grid to keep charged.

Even more bad news, "Emergency services would be strained, and command and control might be lost. Whether it is terrestrial catastrophes or extreme space weather incidents, the results can be devastating to modern societies that depend in a myriad of ways on advanced technological systems," University of Colorado Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics director Daniel Baker, said in a statement of his own.

All in all, 2011 is our next solar storm that is predicted to flare up. A pissed off sun is going to set off a HUGE piss pool of electrical energy in our direction and is going to hit our magnetosphere like a train hitting a fully loaded 18 wheeler head on. The results are pretty much imaginable but the fact is, if that does happen, we are going to be up to our heads in trouble. By shotguns, fill up your gas tanks and reserves, and get ready for anarchy! HAHA just kidding, hopefully it isn't that bad.
