Marvin Schur, a 93 year old WWII veteran, was found dead on his bedroom floor in a winter jacket and with over 4 layers of clothing. Authorities that were on the scene said that the elderly man died “slowly and painfully.” He passed away just days after the electric company installed a “limiter” which limited electric consumption and thus leading to his death.

Sadly this tragedy happened during the bone cold weather. His passing happened over the 4 days that he was without power. The cold crept into his home where he began to slowly die.

The community of 34,000 including his neighbors raised some issues with the electric company and their policies. A 37 year old neighbor of Mr. Schur stated “There's got to be a way in today's computer age they can find out if someone's over a certain age, it's just sad."

Mr. Schur didn’t have any children and his wife had passed away a few years ago.

The timeline that lead to his death is as follows. On January 13, 2009, a worker with the city owned light company installed a power limited,  which limits power and shuts down once the set limit is reached. In order to restore power, the homeowner must walk outside to the meter and switch it back to on. It is an annoying strategy that the company claims to have used for over 40 years. The power company didn’t send any of their workers to talk to the elderly man. On January 17, 2009 the man was found dead by neighbors.

The highest temperature of those days were 12 degrees and running as low as –9 degrees. He was believed to have passed away on January 15.
